Journeys, Adventures, Chocolate Cake, and Cheez Its

A journey filled with exciting experiences and unknown risks—sign me up. Oh wait, that’s called life. Been there, thankfully still doing that.

Why do we convince ourselves that we are trapped, unable to explore something new or

have an adventure because of money or time, or whatever other roadblocks we throw up?

Think about this. From where I stand in this present moment, anywhere step I take in any direction will be one I’ve never taken before. That’s adventure.

In lieu breaking New Year’s Resolutions, I’ve decided to pack my cerebral suitcase—not the same as the bags under my eyes in case you’re wondering—and go exploring.

I want to be healthy. That’s definitely a new adventure as I turn fifty this year. What is going on here? I’m going to take a nap and then I’ll think about it.

I want to be a better wife, mother, and friend. Fortunately, I believe I have set the bar low here, so an improvement here should be a piece of cake. Which kinda brings me back to the whole be healthy thing. Is it just me, or does everyone else know that the piece of cake is chocolate?

But the biggest, scariest adventure I am on is that of a writer. I’m going to go to conferences, talk to agents, and spend countless hours sitting at my computer revealing to the world what my husband has known for years now. I’m different, not the same, or if you prefer his term—weird. Want to talk about character arc, Oxford commas, or how to hide a body? I’m in. As an introvert and a people pleaser, this journey may require anxiety medication and counseling before I’m through. Or maybe just more chocolate cake.

And what happens if I make it? Well I guess I’ll be happier than a chipmunk with a Cheez It (Sorry, but it goes with the picture, so I had to say it. And it is pretty catchy, don’t you think?).

And if I don’t, well I’ll still be pretty stinkin’ happy because I tried. I mean we still get cake, right?

What are your thoughts? What’s the worst thing that can happen if you try, but come up short?
